Attempting to make ends meet, a sleep-deprived security guard lands a gig at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. He quickly realizes on day one that the late shift at Freddy’s won’t be easy.

The fans asked and finally received it after many years of production. The creator of the game franchise, Scott Cawthorn, and Blumhouse Productions, teamed up to give the fans the highly anticipated Five Nights at Freddy’s film. This film quickly made their money back as this $20 million movie reached $78 million opening weekend in the US and Canada. Overall, they made $130 million worldwide during opening weekend.

Josh Hutcherson’s rent must’ve been due, or he was behind on bills, because his performance as the security guard, Mike Schmidt, was phenomenal. In a long time, I have never seen someone play a stressed-out and sleep-deprived older brother. Mike was determined to keep his sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), from the unsupportive Aunt Jan (Mary Stuart Masterson). In some ways, Aunt Jan reminded me of Nana from Ryan Murphy’s old show, The New Normal (2012). Besides Josh’s and Mary’s performances, the whole cast came on set as if they had something to prove. Elizabeth Lail and the famous Matthew Lillard made for great secondary characters. The way they carried their character added more oomph to the plot.

From confirmed theories to Matpat’s cameo, this movie was nothing less than great. The animatronics also looked like they were ripped straight from the game, which is good. The red eyes when they were ready to attack were a great added detail.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie; I wish the pacing at the beginning was faster than it was. Other than that, this movie was perfect. However, you won’t get much enjoyment if you aren’t one of the diehard fans who played the games or watched hours of theory crafting videos. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a film that tells a story for the fans and not for everyone. I will say, however, that if this movie looks attractive when you watch it, you should do a deep dive and join the fandom. This movie deserves a solid rating of 7.5/10.

Five Nights at Freddy’s can be seen in a theater near you or available to stream on Peacock.
