Talks With Myself Is A Story For Us By Us

You’ve asked for phenomenal gay Black shows, and Talks With Myself is one of them! Director Roger Omeus Jr has returned with season six of Talks With Myself, a show that navigates love, sex, friendship, and vulnerability in the lives of its characters, specifically Morris Chadway, who uses his online confessionals to work through it. Are you willing to have those talks with yourself?

Talks With the Big Screen

I had the opportunity to attend a screening of the first two episodes of the new season of Talks With Myself, hosted by Howard University’s Intercultural Affairs. The head of the department introduced director Roger Omeus Jr. and actor Erby Beauvil, who expressed thanks and gratitude to the audience for attending. I must say, I felt a sense of belonging… a sense of community in that auditorium! So many Black and queer faces among the crowd came together to view Black gay art, something much needed nowadays. Who needs Heated Rivalry when you have Talks With Myself?

The screening itself was nothing short of a good time. I feel like I’ve known the characters all my life. They felt real, raw, and authentic–something you don’t see often with gay Black stories. I found myself pointing out traits and experiences in the characters that I have or have dealt with in my life. I was immersed from start to end!

Talks With the Cast

Shortly after the screening, Malachi Stewart moderated a panel in which the cast spoke about their characters and the journeys they are embarking on this season, followed by a Q&A with the audience. You have characters like Morris (Kenyon L. O’Brien) navigating marriage with a man and dealing with past trauma after a late coming-out story, Maurice (Darryl Dwayne) dealing with life after a crazy & tumultuous relationship, Jason (Erby Beauvil) reclaiming his sexual freedom, Dustin (Ondre Glasco) being open to what his new life brings, and more! I loved how Roger makes it his mission to incorporate his cast’s feedback on the characters they play into his writing. They are just as important to the process of bringing authenticity to the characters they bring to life!

I also enjoyed how the cast and crew fully embraced Black sexuality with the show. Normally, sex within Black love stories is looked down upon; it’s almost meant to feel taboo. However, Talks With Myself breaks the stigma that gay Black men cannot be sexual on screen. The show uses it as a form of liberation and storytelling tool to showcase intimacy and start conversations that navigate versatility, bottom shaming, and the complexities of gay Black sexuality on screen. We deserve to be seen, and not to feel uncomfortable for showing up on screen in ways others shun us for

We also heard from Roger and the cast about the importance of being vulnerable when telling stories that address gay Black trauma within the community. Gay Black trauma is something that we as a community are familiar with, and this show does a great job at showing that the trauma isn’t a gimmick in this series. There’s healing in approaching these conversations to break the cycle of not taking our issues seriously. Morris’ use of therapy and vlog journals is just one way we see how characters navigate these problems. A healed community is a warm, loving community!

Talks With the Community

I implore you to tune into Talks With Myself immediately! The lack of attention for Gay Black stories should be more than just a conversation starter when a gay white show gains popularity. Support gay Black art as much as you support everything else! Don’t talk about it, be about it!

I want to give Roger and the cast their flowers for bringing us one of the many gay Black stories out there, in a time when it’s needed! Taking ownership of their work, rather than waiting for a big network to pick it up and erase the best parts that make these shows great, is an impressive feat. Also, big thanks again to Howard University for hosting a screening like this and I’m Your Venus! The work you do does not go unnoticed.

Talks With Myself is streaming on YouTube, and the first five episodes of season six is available to watch on OmeProTV now! Be sure to follow the Roger and the cast below.
